We all know that the backlinks are the building blocks of Search Engine Optimization. They are one of the important parts of any successful SEO or a Digital Marketing campaign.

However, I believe there is a resource which is underutilized out there for backlink building: finding your broken pages that have been linked to external resources.

Finding the perfect backlink takes many hours. It can take days, weeks, or even longer time to disclose the links. You can outline links for the further process of backlinks. I use it on a daily basis to build the best backlinks from the competitor pages like 404 error pages.

Broken links or dead links are those on your website that point only two non‐existent resources—these can be either internal or external pages.

In Ahrefs Site Explorer, “Broken backlinks” reports are available. It shows all the 404 pages which refer to that link to a target website along with their text.

Also, you will be able to see some useful metrics for referring pages like domain rating and URL rating, and it has a number of social scores.

You can find a complete list of all 404 error pages that a target website which has another report of Site Explorer called “Best by links”. You can apply the “404 not found” filter.

So that you don’t miss out some valuable “link juice” or backlinks for your site, I recommend you to restore those broken pages or dead links. Or redirect other relevant or related pages of your website.

A broken link is the type of link on the web page which no longer works.  Websites encounter this due to two or more reasons which are as follows:

  1. A wrong URL entered in the URL place by the website owner.
  2. URL removed from the destination place linked from the website.
  3. A website is no longer available online.
  4. A web page moved without redirecting.

Difference Between Dead and Broken Links

  • Broken Link: A broken link refers to the text or link which is clickable. It will take you to the image, document and web page that actually lead us to “page not found”.
  • Dead Link: Dead Link is a hyperlink that points to the page which is deleted and removed from the website. This is also called orphan link. It might be in temporary conditions if the web server is down.
